It depends on the size, the material, how much excavation is needed, and whether the site needs drainage work — which is why we quote after walking the property rather than guessing over the phone. Two patios of the same square footage can differ significantly if one sits on flat ground and the other needs a retaining wall and a drainage run. The estimate is free and itemized.
How long does a patio installation take?
A straightforward patio is usually several days to a week, depending on size. The bulk of that isn't laying pavers — it's the excavation, base prep, and compaction underneath, which is the part that decides whether the patio is still level in ten years. If the project needs retaining walls or drainage, add time for those.
Will a paver patio shift or sink over time?
Not if it's built on a proper base with correct drainage behind and beneath it. Patios that heave, settle, or sprout weeds through the joints almost always share the same cause: a base that was rushed or a drainage problem that was never addressed. That's the part we don't cut, even though it's invisible when the job's done.
Do you install retaining walls?
Yes — and they're a different job from a garden wall, because a retaining wall has to hold back soil and water. That means proper base preparation, correct block and batter, and drainage stone and pipe behind the wall so hydrostatic pressure doesn't push it over. We build them to hold.
Can you work with the grade my yard already has?
That's most of the job, honestly. Very few Connecticut yards are flat, and a good hardscape design works with the slope rather than fighting it — using steps, tiered levels, and walls to turn a difficult grade into something that reads as intentional. We'll tell you honestly what your grade allows.
Do you handle drainage so the patio doesn't flood?
Yes, and we treat it as part of the hardscaping rather than an extra. Water that has nowhere to go will find the lowest point — which is usually the new patio or the foundation. We grade the site and route water away as part of the build, and we'll flag it during the estimate if your property needs more than that.
