Spring, once the soil has warmed and the beds are cleaned out — usually late April through May. Mulching too early traps cold in the ground and slows the plants down. A second light application in autumn is common on beds that see a lot of leaf drop, but most properties only need it once a year.
What kind of mulch do you use?
Typically a hardwood or hemlock blend — they hold their colour, knit together well, and don't float away in a heavy rain the way some lighter mulches do. If you've got a preference for a specific colour or material, tell us and we'll price it that way.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches is the sweet spot. Deeper than that and you're smothering roots and holding too much moisture against the stems. It's also worth knowing that piling mulch up against a tree trunk — the mulch volcano you see everywhere — is genuinely harmful, which is why we keep the rings clear of the trunk flare.
Do you pull the old mulch out first?
Usually not, and you usually don't want us to. A light top-up over last year's mulch is fine as long as the old layer hasn't matted into a water-repelling crust. When it has, or when there's a buildup of several years, we'll tell you and remove what needs to come out rather than adding to the problem.
How much does mulch cost in Connecticut?
It depends on the total square footage of the beds and how much prep they need, which is why we price by the bed rather than quoting a number per yard over the phone. A house with a few foundation beds is a very different job from a property with extensive plantings — the free estimate sorts that out in about fifteen minutes.
Will mulching help with weeds?
It helps a great deal — a proper two-to-three inch layer blocks most weed seed from germinating and makes the ones that do come through easy to pull. It isn't a permanent fix on its own, though. If a bed has a serious perennial weed problem, the honest answer is that it needs the roots dealt with before the mulch goes down, and we'll say so.
