Deep enough that it's genuinely gone — typically well below grade, so the stump can't heave back up through the lawn and the mower never finds it. How deep depends on what you plan to do with the spot: a lawn only needs it below the root zone, while a patio or driveway going over it wants more. Tell us the plan and we'll grind accordingly.
Do you remove the stump itself or just grind it?
Grinding is almost always the right answer. It costs far less than excavating, it doesn't tear up the surrounding lawn, and it leaves you with usable ground. We grind the stump and the surface roots down, and haul away or spread the chips depending on what you want done with the spot.
Will the stump grow back?
Grinding removes the stump and the root flare. Some species — certain maples, willows, and poplars — can send up shoots from roots left in the ground, especially if the tree was cut while it was still vigorous. If you've got one of those, we'll tell you at the estimate so you know what to watch for rather than being surprised by it later.
Can you grind a stump in a tight backyard?
Yes — that's a big part of the work we do. A lot of North Haven properties have stumps behind fences or between houses where a full-size grinder simply won't fit. We match the machine to the access, and we protect the fence, the lawn, and any nearby plantings while we work.
Can I plant grass or a garden where the stump was?
Once the stump is ground and the hole is backfilled, yes — though the ground settles a little over the first season, so top it up with soil before you seed. Fresh chips worked into the soil can slow grass down, so raking them out matters. If you're putting in a bed or a shrub instead of lawn, you can plant almost straight away.
Should I grind the stump at the same time as the removal?
It's cheaper and simpler if you do. The equipment is already on site, the access is already worked out, and you're not paying for a second mobilization. But if you're not sure yet, don't feel pressured — just say so during the free estimate and we'll price the removal on its own.
