Trimming is mostly about appearance and clearance — taking back what's grown over the driveway, the roof, or the walkway. Pruning is about the tree's health and structure: removing dead wood, correcting weak limbs, and thinning so wind passes through instead of pushing it over. Most jobs are some of both, and you don't need to know which is which — that's what the assessment is for.
When is the best time of year to prune in Connecticut?
Late winter to early spring is ideal for most species — the tree is dormant, the structure is visible without leaves, and it heals fast going into the growing season. That said, dead and hazardous limbs should come out whenever they're a risk, regardless of the calendar. We work year-round and will tell you honestly if waiting is the better call.
Will pruning hurt my tree?
Done correctly, no — it helps. The damage comes from bad pruning: topping, flush cuts, and taking off more than a tree can afford to lose. We remove what needs to come off and no more, and we make the cuts where the tree can seal over them.
Do you climb, or do you use a bucket truck?
Whichever the tree calls for. A bucket truck is faster when there's clear access, and we use one when we can. But a lot of North Haven properties have trees between houses, over fences, or in backyards a truck can't reach — that work gets climbed and rigged by hand.
Can you trim around power lines?
We do not work within the utility easement — that's the power company's responsibility, and it's a genuine safety line nobody should cross. We'll tell you during the estimate when a tree is in that zone and point you to the right call to make.
How often should trees be pruned?
